Blackpink Guide

Hello, readers and fans! Today, I am here to cover one of the biggest girl groups in the K-pop world, Blackpink. Now, similar to BTS, I have been scared to post about the girls from fear of possible harassment and bullying, but I hope that no one does. So, let’s get started!

Blackpink (블랙핑크) is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment and consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Cited as the “biggest girl group in the world”, they are considered the most successful Korean girl group internationally and a leading force in the Korean Wave. They are stylistically associated with the “girl crush” concept in K-pop—exploring themes of self-confidence and female empowerment.

Their fandom name is “Blink”, The name derives from Blackpink. The “BL” comes from black and “INK” from pink, meaning that the fans start and end with Blackpink.

Career

2010-2016: Formation and pre-debut activities

Blackpink began forming when YG Entertainment held tryouts worldwide for preteen or teenage recruits to create a new girl group after launching its first major one, 2NE1, in 2009.

According to the members, joining the label as trainees was to enroll in a full-time pop-star academy, with Jennie describing the experience as “more strict than school” and Rosé comparing it to “The X Factor” with dorm rooms. For members who had left their lives outside of South Korea, the pace of training alongside the culture shock was especially difficult.

Preparations for Blackpink’s debut began as early as 2011, when YG Entertainment revealed on November 14th, 2011 that their new girl group would debut in the early half of 2012 and feature at least seven members. Since then, numerous news and rumors surfaced surrounding the new girl group’s debut being delayed, although there had been no official information.

It was only on May 18th, 2016, that YG Entertainment confirmed the girl group would debut that July, stating that the members were selected through years of stiff competition. The label later confirmed that Jang Hanna and Moon Sua, who were introduced to the public as potential members of the new girl group, were not included in the lineup.

Jennie was the first group member revealed on June 1st, 2016. She joined YG Entertainment as a trainee in 2010 after moving back to South Korea from New Zealand. She had been introduced to the public for the first time in 2012 in a photo titled “Who’s that girl?” on YG Entertainment’s website on April 10th, 2016.

Jennie continued to be promoted as a member of the new girl group through multiple collaborations: she starred in the music video for G-Dragon’s “That XX” (2012) from his EP “One of a Kind” and featured in the songs “Black” (2013), from his album “Coup d’Etat”, and “Special” (2013), from Lee Hi’s album “First Love.”

Lisa was revealed as the new girl group’s second member on June 8th, 2016. She was the only individual among 4,000 applicants to pass the 2010 YG Entertainment audition in her native country Thailand and became the label’s first foreign trainee in 2011.

She was first introduced in May 2012 in a video that was posted on YG Entertainment’s YouTube channel, titled “Who’s that girl???”.Lisa also appeared in the music video for Taeyang’s “Ringa Linga” in 2013.She became a spokesperson for street-wear brand Nona9on in 2015 and cosmetics brand Moonshot in 2016.

Jisoo was revealed as the new group’s third member on June 15th, 2016. She joined YG Entertainment as a trainee in July 2011 and appeared in several advertisements and music videos in her pre-debut years, including the music videos for Epik High’s “Spoiler + Happy Ending” (2014) from their album Shoebox and Hi Suhyun’s “I’m Different” (2014). Jisoo also made a cameo appearance in 2015 drama The Producers.

Rosé was the final member to be revealed on June 22nd, 2016. She ranked first among 700 applicants in the 2012 YG Entertainment audition in Australia, after which she signed a trainee contract with the label and moved to Seoul to begin training. She featured in G-Dragon’s track “Without You” (2012) from One of a Kind, credited as “? from YG New Girl Group” until her official public introduction.

On June 29th, 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed that the new girl group would have four members instead of the originally planned nine and revealed its official name as Blackpink. According to a label representative, the group’s name meant “pretty isn’t everything” and symbolized that “they are a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent.”

Jisoo later disclosed in a press conference that other group names under consideration included Pink Punk, Baby Monster, and Magnum.Blackpink released their first dance practice video on July 6th, 2016, which garnered much public attention. On July 29th, 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed that Blackpink’s debut would be on August 8th, 2016.

BTS Guide

Hello, readers and fans! Today, I am here to talk about one of the many biggest K-pop groups in the K-pop and international music markets, BTS. I know that I have yet to mention them on my blog, mainly out of fear of harassment and bullying, but I hope that you guys understand. Let’s get into it.

BTS (방탄소년단) also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan, Bullet Proof Boy Scouts, and the Bangtan Boys, are a 7-member boy group under HYPE Entertainment (Formerly Big Hit Entertainment). The members consist of Jin, RM, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin, and Jungkook, who co-write or co-produce much of their material.

The group’s fandom name is A.R.M.Y, which was made official on June 13th, 2013, and is an acronym for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth and also means literal army. Their fans are ARMY, and BTS is the armor that protects them, signifying the band, and their ARMY will always be together.

Career

2010-2014: Formation and early years

BTS was formed in 2010 after Big Hit Entertainment (HYPE Entertainment) CEO Bang Si-hyuk wanted to form a hip hop group around RM (Kim Nam-joon), an underground rapper well known on the music scene in Seoul. At the time, physical album sales were on the decline, and digital revenues were not yet high enough to compensate.

Seeing a need for diversified income streams, Bang decided to form an idol group instead, because of the potential for live concert performances and passionate support from fans of such groups. Many trainees refused to become part of an idol group, but J-Hope, RM, and Suga remained.

Bang chose to vary from the usual, highly regimented idol groups and create one where the members would be individuals rather than an ensemble and free to express themselves. Auditions were held in 2010 with plans to launch the following year. The band members lived together, practicing up to 15 hours a day, and first performed before a small crowd of industry insiders in 2013.

Suga stated, “We started to tell the stories that people wanted to hear and were ready to hear, stories that other people could not or would not tell. We said what other people were feeling—like pain, anxieties, and worries. That was our goal to create this empathy that people can relate to.”

BTS’s representation by Big Hit, rather than one of the three agencies that dominated K-pop at the time, allowed the individual members leeway to express their individuality and have input into the music.

On June 12th, 2013, BTS released their debut single album “2 Cool 4 Skool”, along with the title track “No More Dream”, neither of which sold particularly well at the time. On June 13th, 2013, BTS made their stage debut on M Countdown with the single, “No More Dream”.

Nevertheless, according to Kathy Sprinkel in her book on BTS, that single was “spotlighting young people’s anxiety in the face of lofty parental expectations, sent shock waves through the K-pop ranks. Here was a musical act that wasn’t pulling any punches. More specifically, they had a point of view, and they weren’t afraid to take on topics that are considered taboo in South Korean society and elsewhere.”

The album reached the top five on South Korea’s Gaon Music Chart. In “2 Cool 4 Skool,” BTS were inspired by an old-school hip-hop sound from the 1990s. The album’s release was followed by appearances on Korean music shows, which caught the attention of reviewers and viewers.

In September 2013, BTS released the second entry in their “school trilogy”: the EP, O!RUL8,2?. The album was released alongside the single “N.O.” Similarly to “2 Cool 4 Skool, “the new release had a theme of students feeling under pressure and needing to sacrifice their dreams and aspirations.

According to scholar Kyung Hyun Kim, many of BTS’s earlier works such as “N.O.” and “No More Dream” were “expressions of rebellion against the establishment that tapped into Korean teenagers’ frustrations with the country’s educational system” and, he stated, helped them build a fan base among young people in North America and Europe.

That same month, BTS starred in their own variety show, SBS MTV’s “Rookie King Channel Bangtan”, in which members parodied variety shows such as VJ Special Forces and MasterChef Korea. At the end of the year, BTS was recognized with several New Artist of the Year awards in South Korea.

2014-2017: “Skool Love Affair” and first concert tour

The last entry in BTS “school trilogy”, the Skool Luv Affair EP, was released in February 2014.The release topped the Gaon Album Chart, and appeared on Billboard’s World Albums Chart for the first time, peaking at number three.

The EP was supported by two singles: “Boy in Luv” and “Just One Day”. Following Skool Luv Affair’s release, BTS played at their first fan meeting in Seoul, selecting the name A.R.M.Y. for the fan club.In July 2014, BTS hosted a concert in West Hollywood, their first show in the United States, and in August, they appeared at KCON in Los Angeles.

In August 2014, BTS released the album Dark & Wild, which reached number two in South Korea. It was supported by two singles: “Danger” and “War of Hormone”.The group went on their first concert tour, 2014 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet, which lasted from October to December 2014.The band launched their first Japanese studio album, “Wake Up”, in December 2014; the release peaked at number three on the Oricon Albums Chart. After the album’s release, BTS held their 1st Japan Tour 2015 “Wake Up: Open Your Eyes” in February 2015.

BTS experimented with other styles of music besides hip-hop in The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1, released in 2015. BTS wanted to express the beauty and anxiousness of youth and settled on the title of “花樣年華”, loosely interpreted to define “youth” metaphorically as “the most beautiful moment in life”. The album served as an introduction to their youth trilogy of albums dedicated to the struggles of young people.

The single “I Need U” was a top-five hit in South Korea and garnered the group a win on SBS MTV’s The Show.

The second single “Dope  (쩔어) reached number three on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart and its music video was viewed over 100 million times on YouTube.

The group began the world tour extension of their Red Bullet Tour in June, titled 2015 Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet, visiting cities throughout Asia, Oceania, North America, and Latin America. “For You”, in Japanese, was released together with Japanese versions of “War of Hormone” and “Let Me Know” on June 17th, 2015, and immediately topped Oricon’s daily chart.

In November, BTS commenced their third concert tour, 2015 BTS LIVE “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: On Stage”, which began with three sold-out shows in Seoul, and was extended to Japan. Also, the EP focused more on the serious and speculative aspects of youth, touching on the pursuit of success, loneliness, affection for their origins, and the suffering of the younger generation due to unfavorable conditions in current society.

The album topped the weekly Gaon Album and Billboard World Albums charts. It also marked their first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart, making it for one week at number 171,and eight of the tracks appeared on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart.

Their compilation album and the finale to their “youth trilogy”, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever was released on May 2nd, 2016. With 300,000 presold copies, it included three new singles: “Epilogue: Young Forever”, “Fire”, and “Save Me”, which debuted in the top three spots on the Billboard World Digital Charts. The album topped the Gaon Album Chart in South Korea for two consecutive weeks and reached number 107 on the Billboard 200.

“The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever” won Album of the Year at the 2016 Melon Music Awards. BTS went on their Asia tour extension, 2016 BTS LIVE “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage: Epilogue” from May to August 2016. Tickets for the 14 shows in 10 Asian cities sold out, some in as little as five seconds.

In September 2016, BTS released their second Japanese studio album “Youth.” The album sold 44,547 on the first day of its release, and charted 1st in the Oricon Daily Album Chart. The album was eventually certified Gold with sales of roughly over 100,000 in Japan.

It was followed one month later in October by their next studio album “Wings”, which combined the themes of youth presented in their previous “youth trilogy” with temptation and adversity.

The album and its tracks, including the single “Blood Sweat & Tears” immediately rose to the top on eight music charts, including the Gaon Music Chart, and led the iTunes album charts in 23 countries. “Wings” opened at number 26 on the Billboard 200, with 16,000 album-equivalent units in the US for the week of its release, the best week ever there for a K-pop album. It became the best-selling album in Gaon Album Chart history.

In February 2017, BTS released the repackaged edition of Wings titled “You Never Walk Alone.” The 700,000 pre-orders of it (an increase from the 500,000 pre-orders of Wings) helped break the record for most albums sold in a month in South Korea, as it reached 1.49 million copies by the end of its first month. The title track was “Spring Day” and it won Best Song of the Year at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.

BTS’s second world tour, 2017 BTS Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour, began in February. On the tour, BTS played arenas in the US, such as New Jersey’s Prudential Center and California’s Honda Center.

Tickets for the North American leg sold out within hours and two shows were added. After completing the North American leg, BTS attended the 24th Billboard Music Awards in May and won Top Social Artist, the first K-pop group to win a Billboard award. BTS fans cast over 300 million votes for the band and broke a six-year winning streak held by Justin Bieber, a performer with 100 million Twitter followers. This caused the international media to focus on the ability of BTS’s fandom to propel the group to such a victory.

BTS released a remake of Seo Taiji’s “Come Back Home” (1995) in July 2017, giving it new lyrics but maintaining the theme of urging societal change. Later that year, BTS went on their “Love Yourself” album series, with theme of the enlightenment of self-love through the “起承轉結” ( 기승전결) narrative sequence of “beginning, development, turn, and conclusion.”

BTS released its first part, their fifth EP, “Love Yourself: Her”, on September 18th, 2017. RM considered “DNA”, the title track from that album, as “taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives.” He said of the album, “I believe it’s going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of our Chapter Two.” Sonically, the EP served as “a dual exploration of the group’s electro-pop and hip-hop leanings”.

“Love Yourself: Her” debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200.The album had 1,664,041 sales in May 2017 to lead the Gaon Chart, and was the first in 16 years to exceed 1.2 million copies sold since g.o.d’s fourth album Chapter 4 (2001). “DNA” was released simultaneously with the EP, and its music video accumulated 21 million views in its first 24 hours. It became BTS’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, charting at number 85, making them the first K-pop boy band to reach that chart.

A remix of “Mic Drop” from the album, featuring Desiigner, was released as a single and peaked at number 28, the first time a K-pop group had cracked the top forty. Both singles attained Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in early 2018.”Mic Drop” achieved Platinum status in the US later that year.

In November 2017, BTS became the first K-pop group to perform at the American Music Awards. BTS won Artist of the Year at the 19th Mnet Asian Music Awards in December, winning for the second consecutive year. They released “DNA” and “Mic Drop” together with a new song “Crystal Snow” as a single album in Japan on December 6th, 2017, though the songs were made digitally available elsewhere. It topped the Oricon Chart for the week of its release. It was the only album by a foreign artist to be certified Double Platinum in Japan in 2017.

Later that month, they made their Japanese television prime time music show debut on Music Station Super Live and ended the year by performing on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

In 2017, BTS partnered with UNICEF on the “Love Myself” campaign, intended to help end violence, abuse, and bullying, and to promote self-esteem and well-being among young people. Both Big Hit and the group pledged money to promote the campaign, and BTS sold special “Love Myself” merchandise and set up dedicated booths at concert venues. The campaign was renewed in 2021, with UNICEF deeming it to have been successful.

2018-2020

BTS won major awards at the Golden Disc and Seoul Music Awards in January 2018. In March, the group premiered an eight-episode documentary titled “Burn the Stage” that offered a behind-the-scenes look at their 2017 Wings Tour, exclusively on YouTube Premium.

Their third Japanese studio album, “Face Yourself”, was released on April 4th, 2018, and quickly reached the top 5 of the U.S. iTunes Albums chart.

A nine-minute short film, titled Euphoria: Theme of “Love Yourself: Wonder” and featuring the song “Euphoria”, followed the next day as a prelude to the group’s third Korean-language studio album, “Love Yourself: Tear.

BTS promoted Tear’s May 18th, 2018, release with an appearance at the 25th Billboard Music Awards two days later, where they made their initial BBMA performance with their single, “Fake Love”.

The group also won Top Social Artist for a second consecutive time. The album coincided with the “轉” or “turn” of the series, touching on the tortuous enlightenment of loving without being loved, the pains and sorrows of separation, and providing encouragement to those without dreams.

“Love Yourself: Tear” debuted at number one its first week on the Billboard 200, becoming BTS’s first number-one album in the US and the first K-pop album to top the US albums chart. It also became BTS’s first top-10 release in Britain, reaching number eight on the UK Albums Chart. “Fake Love” became BTS’s top-10 single on the Hot 100, the first time a song sung mostly in a language other than English had debuted in the top 10.

BTS released their compilation album, “Love Yourself: Answer” in August, 2018. The album was supported by the single “Idol” and its alternative digital release featuring Nicki Minaj.

“Love Yourself: Answer” sold over 1.9 million copies on the Gaon Album Chart in August 2018.The album became BTS’s second number-one on the Billboard 200 and led to their highest US sales week in the country to that point with 185,000 album equivalent units. In November 2018, “Love Yourself: Answer” became the first Korean language album to be certified Gold by the RIAA.”Idol” and “Love Yourself: Answer” both received Platinum certifications in the US, with sales of more than 1 million.

In addition, with Love Yourself: Answer’s release in August 2018, BTS commenced their world tour, BTS World Tour: Love Yourself, with two concerts in the Seoul Olympic Stadium, which sold out in a matter of seconds, as did others of the 22 shows in 12 countries. In October, BTS released their collaboration with Steve Aoki “Waste It on Me”, their first all-English language feature.

For the final stop of the North American leg, the group performed at Citi Field in New York City, marking the first time a Korean act performed at a US stadium. According to StubHub, BTS was the second best-selling concert act outside the US, behind only Ed Sheeran. That October, BTS renewed their contract with Big Hit Entertainment through 2026.

In early November 2018, a popular Japanese music show cancelled BTS’s performance, citing a T-shirt a member wore the year before, bearing a photograph of a mushroom cloud following the bombing of Nagasaki. In the same month, the Jewish human rights organization Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) stated that BTS owed an apology for that shirt, and for clothing and flags with Nazi symbolism.

Big Hit Entertainment issued an apology, explaining that the images were not intended to be hurtful to the victims of Nazism or atomic bombings and that the group and management would take steps to prevent future mistakes.

They also stated that the flags were meant to be a commentary on the Korean school system. The apology was accepted by SWC and the Korean Atomic Bomb Victim Association.John Lie, in his scholarly article on BTS, opined that the Nazi incident showed that the group is not tightly controlled, as are other K-pop ensembles, whose every move seems scripted, and that the members have opinions and are not afraid to express them.

At the 20th Mnet Asian Music Awards, BTS won Artist of the Year and ranked number eight on Billboard’s year-end Top Artist Chart and were also the number two act of the year in the Duo/Group ranking, only behind Imagine Dragons. They were also listed as one of the 50 most influential people by Bloomberg for their “willingness to address social issues, mental health, and politics, despite being in a genre often painted as bubble gum pop”.

In February 2019, BTS, for the first time, were presenters at the Grammy Awards. In April, Time named them one of the Time 100, the most influential people of 2019. Their EP, “Map of the Soul: Persona”, was released on April 12th, 2019 with the single “Boy with Luv” ( 작은 것들을 위한 시), featuring American singer Halsey.

The EP’s release was followed by a performance on Saturday Night Live, the first K-pop act to appear there. “Map of the Soul: Persona” became the first Korean-language album to reach the number one position in both the UK and Australia, and the group’s third album to top the Billboard 200 in less than a year. “Map of the Soul: Persona” became the best-selling album ever in South Korea in terms of physical copies sold, with more than 3.2 million sales in less than a month. “Boy with Luv” debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2019, the highest placement ever for a K-pop song.

Following their two wins at the 26th Billboard Music Awards in May, including for Top Duo/Group, BTS went on their world tour stadium extension, “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself.” Due to the demand, BTS added more shows after tickets for the first dates sold out within two hours.

In the lead up to the release of their mobile game BTS World, in June 2019 BTS released “Dream Glow” featuring Charli XCX, “A Brand New Day” with Zara Larsson, and “All Night” with Juice Wrld.

The group released the song “Heartbeat” with a music video from the game’s official soundtrack, titled “BTS World: Original Soundtrack.” The soundtrack was certified Double Platinum by Gaon.

On July 3rd, 2019, pre-orders for the single “Lights” crossed one million copies, marking the first time a foreign artist had accomplished this in Japan since Celine Dion in 1995.”Lights” debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for the chart issue date of July 8th, 2019, and reached number one the following week.On August 8th, 2019, “Lights” received Million certification from the RIAJ, denoting shipments of one million copies.

“Love Yourself: Her” and “Love Yourself: Tear” both crossed 2 million copies in August. All three albums of the Love Yourself series have sold more than 2 million copies each in South Korea.”Love Yourself: Tear” gained silver certification by the BPI for sales in the UK, becoming their third album to do so following “Love Yourself: Answer” and “Map of the Soul: Persona.”

For the final stop of their record-breaking “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” World Tour, the group played Seoul’s Olympic Stadium. BTS was the third top-grossing touring musical act of 2019.That same month, they released a remix version of the song “Make It Right” featuring Lauv.

In November, BTS won three times at the 2019 American Music Awards, for Best Tour, Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock, and Favorite Social Artist (the second consecutive year).

In December, they attended both the 2019 Melon Music Awards and the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards. In each case, they became the first group to sweep the four major awards. At the 34th Golden Disc Awards, BTS became the first artists in history to win grand prizes in both the physical and digital categories in a single year.

“Map of the Soul: Persona” was named the second best-selling physical album of 2019 in the US by Nielsen Music behind Taylor Swift’s Lover and was ranked sixth overall on the chart of Top 10 Albums (Total Sales) in the US. BTS wrapped 2019 as the fourth-highest-ranked group on Billboard’s Top Billboard 200 Artists–Duo/Group ranking, behind Queen, Imagine Dragons and the Beatles.

“Map of the Soul: Persona” was named as the third best-selling album of 2019 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), making BTS the first Korean artist to be listed on the Global Top 10 Album Chart in consecutive years. The IFPI named BTS as one of the best-selling artists of 2019 for a second consecutive year, making them the first non-English speaking act to achieve this.

In January 2020, BTS released “Black Swan” along with a choreography art film performed by MN Dance Company of Slovenia as the first single from their album “Map of the Soul: 7.” Album distributor Dreamus reported that stock pre-orders of the album reached a record-breaking 4.02 million.Later that month, BTS performed at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, making BTS the first Korean act to perform at the Grammys.

The album was supported by the single “On” and an alternative digital release of it featuring Australian singer Sia. According to Gaon Chart, “Map of the Soul: 7” sold over 4.1 million copies in nine days after its release, surpassing “Map of the Soul: Persona” to become the best-selling album in South Korean history and the first album to be certified quadruple million. The album debuted atop the US Billboard 200, making BTS the fastest group to earn four number one albums since the Beatles in 1966–1968.

“On” debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, giving BTS its first top-five hit, and the most Hot 100 top-10 entries of any Korean act, with three. BTS planned to support the Map of the Soul album series with a concert series, Map of the Soul Tour, beginning in April, but this was indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In April 2020, BTS became the first K-pop artist to sell more than 20 million albums cumulatively, making them the best-selling artist in South Korean history. That month, amid the pandemic restrictions, BTS held a two-day online streaming concert event titled “Bang Bang Con,” where the group shared footage of past concerts on their YouTube channel.

On the newly launched Global Album All Format Chart, “Map of the Soul: 7” claimed first place and “Be (Deluxe Edition)” claimed fourth. On March 14th, 2021, BTS performed “Dynamite” at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the first Korean nominee to perform, though they did not win the award.

On April 1st, 2021, BTS released “Film Out”, the first single from their then-upcoming Japanese compilation album, BTS, the Best. On May 21st, 2021, BTS released their second English-language single, “Butter”. It debuted at number one on the Hot 100—their fourth number one in nine months—making them the quickest act to achieve four chart-toppers since Justin Timberlake in 2006, and the fastest group since the Jackson 5 in 1970.

Their next English-language single, “Permission to Dance”, was released on July 9th, 2021. It became BTS’s eighth number-one on the Digital Songs chart, extending their record as the group with the most number-one entries on the ranking.

On September 24th, 2021, the band released the single “My Universe” with Coldplay. The single debuted at number one on the Hot 100, making it the first collaboration between two groups to debut at number one.

The band held an online concert, titled “Permission to Dance” on Stage, on October 24th, 2021, in Seoul. On November 23rd, 2021, “Butter” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.Between November 27th and December 2nd, 2021, BTS held their first live performances before an in-person audience since before the pandemic. On June 10th, 2022, BTS released their three-CD anthology album “Proof.”On June 14th, 2022, during their ninth anniversary celebrations, the band announced a temporary suspension of group activities to focus on solo projects and other endeavors. Hybe Corporation, which owns Big Hit, clarified in subsequent statements that BTS was neither disbanding nor going on hiatus, but would be actively furthering their individual careers with the label’s full support while still participating in group activities, including the filming of “Run BTS.”

The incident caused Hybe Corporation’s stock to decline rapidly, resulting in a decrease in market value of US$1.7 billion. On August 24th, 2022, Billboard magazine reported that BTS would be performing in Busan on October 15th, 2022 in a benefit concert in support of the city’s efforts to have a World Exposition in 2030, participating under the banner “Yet to Come”.

In spite of the announcement of the October 2022 benefit concert, Hybe Corporation’s stock prices dropped to below its original IPO amid continuing market speculation about the implications of the upcoming mandatory military enlistment of the band’s members. Under South Korean laws, all able-bodied males must complete between 18 and 21 months of military service, usually by age 28.

Bloomberg News reported the concert as a success but also indicated that there were no further concert dates scheduled. It was estimated that if the band members completed their service, Hybe Corporation would lose nearly US$10 billion over ten years, with the loss to the South Korean economy at nearly US$39 billion.

In October 2022, Big Hit confirmed that Jin, the band’s oldest member, aged 29, had withdrawn his enlistment deferral request. The other members planned to enlist later, with the group planning to reunite in 2025 following discharge. At the end of October 2022, BTS earned five nominations for the 2022 MAMA Awards, with the band members receiving eight further nominations as solo artists.

On November 15th, 2022, BTS earned three nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, including a nomination for Best Music Video for “Yet to Come”. “My Universe” was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, making BTS the only act to be nominated three years in a row in this category since its introduction in 2011. The band was also nominated for Album of the Year as featured artists on Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres.

Jin enlisted as an active duty soldier on December 13th, 2022.  On February 26th, 2023, Big Hit Music announced that J-Hope had requested cancellation of the postponement of his military service.

Following their scheduled separation, the band’s BTS ‘Yet to Come’ in Busan concert film was released on February 1st, 2023. During a trip to Spain, RM told EFE that BTS “will come together again when we finish our military service, and we will look for new synergies between us to enter a second phase.”

HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk stated on March 15th, 2023, that their comeback might not occur in 2025 since it was hard to target a specific date, and that they had not discussed their contract renewal yet. J-Hope enlisted as an active duty soldier on April 18th, 2023.

On May 12th, 2023, BTS released a soundtrack “The Planet” for the South Korean animated series Bastions. To commemorate their tenth anniversary, the group released the song “Take Two” on June 9th, 2023.

On September 20th, 2023, HYBE confirmed through a press release that BTS would renew their exclusive contracts. The members will sign these agreements sequentially, considering their military service, after a board resolution with Big Hit Music, solidifying their commitment to future projects starting from 2025 onwards. HYBE expressed their anticipation for supporting BTS’ group endeavors and pledged unwavering support to enhance their worldwide influence, ensuring the group’s continuity even after completing their military service.

Additionally, Big Hit Music announced a donation of ₩1 billion (US$874,164.08) to the Korean Committee for UNICEF in appreciation of BTS and their fanbase, ARMY. The contribution is part of the “Love Myself” campaign, a joint effort launched with BTS in November 2017.On September 22nd, 2023, Suga enlisted as a social worker.RM and V enlisted on December 11th, 2023, followed by Jimin and Jungkook on December 12th, 2023.

Epithymia’s “Myself” Debut EP Review!

Hello, readers and fans! Today, I am here to review the Japanese group Epithymia’s Debut EP, “Myself”. I am very excited for what Epithymia will have to offer for the J-pop scene and what this album is giving.

I have reviewed their previous pre-debut EP, “Music Palette” that was released back in 2023 and that EP had a great selection of addictive and fun songs, so I am really interested in what they will do with this EP, so let’s get into it.

Tracks

Track 1- “Myself”- This track has a lot of rock influences with heavy guitars, drums, and basses. The mix of hip-hop and pop vocals reminded me a lot of rock groups like One Ok Rock and Linkin Park with very deep emotional lyrics and a story that the track conveyed as I listened. Compared their first track on their previous release, I can see the sort of personal inspirations that the members each pulled to create this track. It’s definitely a track that I recommend for lovers of J-rock and hip-hop.

Track 2- “SuperNova- Re-recorded version”- This track was originally on their pre-debut EP “Music Palette” that was released back in early 2023. This version compared to the version on their pre-debut EP definitely has a vibe about with more focus on the minor guitars and bass drums that play throughout the songs. With the two newest members that were added to the group, it definitely adds a very youthful and playful side from the mature side from the original. I noticed also during the 2nd chorus and bridge section that there was a heavy dance electronic beat that was added that honestly took me by surprise. It’s definitely for someone that wants to hear what J-pop music experiments with and how the group is open to different genres.

Track 3- “New Wave-Re-recording Version”- This track was also featured on their pre-debut release, “Music Palette”. This track has a lot of oriental trap influences from the traditional instruments in the production, the upbeat basses and hip-hop influences, and the very fluid vocals create a new energy to the groups’ new changes to their line-up. I feel this track is best seen in a full performance as it has a big performance value with the pauses in the instrumentation but still a great song regardless.

Track 4- “Hiding Your Side-Re-recording version”- This track was originally from their single release, “Story for the Future” released in March 2023. I really like the way this track has a very pop-trap feel but it’s very calm, with soft synths, smooth drums, very soothing vocals, and the melodic raps. Having this track on the EP, I felt like was definitely necessary because it helped create a great balance on the album from the super energetic tracks from before. It’s definitely a song that I feel like I could listen to while driving and just relax. The new members added a new emotion to the re-recording, so I really hope that they continue to explore all their emotional avenues in new releases.

Track 5- “Untie the Soul-Re-recording version”- This track was originally on their single release, “Story of the future”. This track has a very futuristic and very bass-heavy production from the deep basses and synths, the raps provided this intensity that created this almost villain character to the story of lyrics and the vocals were very heroic sounding which made me imagine that kind of music video in my mind while listening. Similar to New Wave, I feel that this song has a HUGE performance value that I feel is necessary with a live performance especially with the empty space in the production that creates moments for dance and explosive performance. Definitely a great track for the group with their new vibe this season.

Track 6-“Fly-Re-recording version”- This track was originally a pre-debut single that was released in August 2023. This track is super fun and groovy. It has a lot of 70s pop influences with the very simple yet impactful synth patterns, the keyboards, guitars and bass guitars with a sort of fun party vibe, and drums that are soft but still play a role in the track. The vocals were definitely the star in this track when it came to how it impacted me as a listener, especially with the new members of the group. The raps weren’t necessarily impactful in this song but still did play a fun role in the character of the song’s overall vibe.

Overall, I think that Epithymia’s debut EP was very solid and really showcased a lot of new sides to the group, especially on their journey to becoming big in the J-pop scene as new artists. As I have listened to Epithymia before their debut, I can say that I am very confident in their ability to bring people together with their performance, energy, and their lyricism with their songs.

I am hoping with how they continue to grow that their music reaches many people in different ways no matter how they find the group, I hope that they do and get many, many opportunities.

Thanks for reading, I’ll see you in the next album review!

Just B’s “Just Be With You” Tour: Denver Stop 3/26/2024 Review!

Hello, readers and fans! Today, I am here to discuss my experience at the Just B tour in Denver. This tour was hosted and promoted by TheKstage. There’s a lot to talk about, and I’m really excited to get into it.

So, when I arrived, I would say the organization of getting into the venue was all over the place with a lot of delays in stuff for the VIP perks and benefits like how we were let in later than the time table that the organizer/promoter established via social media. But it was still nice to receive the benefits regardless. With my ticket, I was able to get a tote bag, a pre-signed album and poster, a tour photocard set of all 6 members, and a hi-touch experience.

For the first song of the night, they performed “Get Away” from their debut album, “Just Burn”. It was an incredible performance full of so much energy and passion. Each of the members really showcased themselves really well as they performed the opening number. I was impressed to hear a B-side track as an opening song as other concerts I have attended usually do a title track as the opener which was a really nice change and can expose newer fans to their amazing discography.

Shot from Get Away

The 2nd song the group performed was “Make It New” from their single album, “Just Begun.” This performance had hard-hitting choreography, strong rap and vocal performance, as well as strong stage presence which really impressed me throughout watching this performance in general.

Shot from Make it New

After the first two songs, the group went into a talking segment where they each introduced themselves to the audience and how excited they were to be in Denver. It was nice to hear the members talk about their excitement to perform and all, which just got me and everyone else excited for what was to come in the following performances.

JM of Just B
Geonu of Just B

The third song they performed was “Re=Load,” the title track of their single album, “Just Begun.” This performance was EXPLOSIVE, colorful, smooth, and very powerful, just like the original music video. Each member honestly stood out in different moments of the performance, and seeing this song live was honestly a new and mind-blowing experience.

Shot from Re=Load

The fourth song they performed was “Try” from their single album, “Just Beat.” This performance was so magical live, the lyrics of this song are so emotional and have a story to them. Seeing this performance live was just insane, I honestly was speechless watching it, especially when the member Bain did the high note I was in awe. It’s one of those performances that you know you will never forget after the time you see it.

Shot from Try

The fifth song they performed was “Don’t Go Back” from their single album, “Just Begun.” Similarly to “Try, “I felt such a deep emotion while watching this performance. There seems to be a deep and heart-wrenching story behind this song as well that just really pulled at your heartstrings. This song, in particular, I felt really showed a really vulnerable side to the group and made me appreciate them a lot more.

Shot from Don’t Go Back

The sixth song they performed was “Damage,” which was the title track of their debut album, “Just Burn.” I will be honest before seeing it live, I didn’t really care much for the song, but I think seeing it live really changed my mind about the song overall. I was stunned and speechless by the impact of this performance, I literally had my mouth on the floor just seeing the group giving 137% into all the details of the choreography, especially in pre-chorus to chorus transitions. I honestly want to see it again.

Shot from Damage

After these three songs, the members took a second to drink some water before getting into a mini talent show of sorts doing different songs other than their own that they covered. The first one was Lim Jimin, Bain, and Geonu dancing to “Super Lady” by (G)-Idle, I was honestly so excited to see them do the iconic choreography but with so much sass and character, it gave me everything I needed.

After those three, Geonu, JM, and Sangwoo performed a cover of “Easy” by Le Sserafim, which was honestly so fun, and they really looked like they were enjoying themselves while they did the dance.

Then, DY, Lim Jimin, and JM did a performance of Taemin’s “Guilty.” As a HUGE fan of DY from the group, I was not prepared for what he was going to do, but when it got to the chorus choreography, he lifted his shirt and the whole audience roared with screams especially me. I was speechless. But it made me appreciate that DY wanted to do that for the fans.

After those three, Bain did a solo dance cover of Tyla’s “Water,” which honestly made me both laugh and happy just because I felt like he was the only member that I felt would do it in the goofiest way possible like he did that night.

Then, JM, Geonu, and DY did a dance performance of “Crazy Form” by ATEEZ, which made the audience go WILD. They really embodied the song so well, and it was so much fun to watch.

The last part of the talent show was Lim Jimin and Sangwoo dancing to “Don’t Go Insane” by DPR Ian, which again I was not expecting AT ALL. But the two of them just really made the performance so easy-going and effortless, which made it so fun to watch.

Moving into the next couple of performances were member solo performances. These performances I felt like really showed each members’ individual talent and personality through the performance they each gave and really showed you how each one of them shine in their own way.

The first solo member performance was DY doing a solo dance performance to “Wonder” by Shawn Mendes. I will be honest, I cried. It was the most beautiful performance I have ever seen from someone. The way he carried himself through each movement and the emotions behind the wordplay of his choreography took my breath away. It made me love him even more than I did before.

After DY was Lim Jimin, who did a solo dance to DPR Ian’s “Don’t Go Insane.” This performance was sexy and confident which really gave us a taste of Lim Jimin’s powerful presence on the stage. He really showed a new side of himself that really blew me away. I was so immersed in the performance that I couldn’t even remember where I was at one moment.

Lim Jimin of Just B during his solo performance

After Lim Jimin was Bain doing his solo performance of “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras. When I say I was SHOOK, I generally mean it here because Bain’s performance was so unexpected and shocking. He showed himself in a different light for me performance-wise as he is normally a cute goofball, but here it was, like, Prepare to meet my alter ego. He blew the whole audience away with this performance, and by the end, everyone was just in awe of him.

Geonu and JM of Just B

After Bain’s solo stage, the members went into another talking segment where they discussed their performances with us. They were so silly and Goofy during this time, which just made me smile.

Shot from Perfect

The group then went into a cover of “Perfect” by One Direction. I loved seeing the cute side of the group after all the powerful and emotional sides that we got to witness. It was so heartfelt and comforting to hear the group perform this song.

Sangwoo and DY during Perfect

After “Perfect,” the group went into a performance of their song, “Coming Home (Acoustic version),” from their newest album, “÷ (Nanugi).” It was very relaxing to hear this song as it, really balanced out the energy of the concert. I felt really calm at that moment, and I think this version is definitely even better live.

After this song, the group went into their song, “Lights On,” from their single album, “Just Begun.” Similarly to “Coming Home, “I really enjoyed the calming and soothing atmosphere that “Lights On” gave. It felt like such an intimate moment with the group as they sang their hearts out to the lyrics and smiled at the audience. The performance was so refreshing, and it really made me love the song so much.

Shot from Me =Naneun

After this performance, the members said their goodbye messages and then got set up for the next performance, which was “Me =(Naneun)” from their album, “= (Neun).” I absolutely loved the rock element of this track and how the group really got the crowd involved with the performance as well.  Seeing the choreography for this song live was also incredible.

After “Me=(Naneun),” the group went into an Unreleased song called “Daddy’s Girl,” which was so much fun to hear, and I honestly really loved it because the members were really getting into the full performance, rocking out and vibing with the audience.

Shot from Domino

After “Daddy’s Girl,” was their performance of “Domino” from “=(Neun).” I really loved how heavy the guitar was in the instrumentation when they performed the song because it made me think I was at more of a K-rock concert and showed me a newer side of them which was nice to hear. The members seemed to really enjoy themselves doing this song, which made me enjoy listening to it.

After “Domino,” the members did their goodbye messages again and said really sweet and heartfelt things about how thankful they were to the fans and that they would want to come back to Denver.

Lim Jimin of Just B shot during their goodbye messages

After these goodbye messages, they went backstage to prepare for the last 3 songs of the evening.

The next song was “Medusa” from their newest release, “÷(Nanugi)”. Honestly, this song live was so fun and charismatic, I really loved how the members just flowed so well together in the choreography moments and the way the song just fit well with the vibe of the whole concert.

Shot from Medusa

After “Medusa” was their song “Youth” also from the “÷(Nanugi)” album. I loved this performance a lot because of how cheerful and happy the members were performing the song as well as the heartfelt message from the lyrics. I feel like having this song in the setlist just made you feel so much closer to the group, almost like you were best friends with them, which I loved.

Shot from Youth

The last song of the night was “Paper Plane” from “÷(Nanugi)”. This part of the show is where the members were super energetic and started to throw water at the audience. It was honestly overwhelming, considering I got water on myself at least 5-6 times. It’s a really cute and very refreshing song that really just made me smile by the end of the night even though I really didn’t want the concert to end.

Shot from Paper Plane

After the concert was the hi-touch session and snapshot session. I didn’t get any snapshots, but I did have hi-touch. The order for the Denver Stop was Sangwoo, Lim Jimin, Bain, JM, Geonu, and DY. I was honestly super shy once I got here because they all looked so pretty in person. I had something to say to them, but all that could come out of my mouth was “Thank you” because I was speechless by each of their beauty in person.

If you guys ever get a chance to see Just B in concert or listen to their music, please do. They are one of the most talented, hard-working, smaller groups I have ever seen in person and I hope to get the opportunity to see them again in the future. I’ll see you in the next post!

Taeyeon Guide

Hello, readers and fans! Today, I am here to do a guide on one of the most legendary female soloists in K-pop history, Taeyeon. I am so super excited to talk about her, so let’s get started.

Kim Taeyeon (김태연) better known by her stage name, Taeyeon, is a South Korean vocalist born on March 9th, 1989 in Jeonju, South Korea. She debuted as a member of the girl group Girls’ Generation in August 2007, which went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea and one of the most popular K-pop groups worldwide. She has since participated in other SM Entertainment projects, including Girls’ Generation-TTS, SM the Ballad, Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG, and the supergroup Got the Beat.

Her individual fandom name is Taeganger.

Career

1989-2008: Early Life and Career start

Taeyeon was born on March 9th, 1989, in Jeonju, South Korea. Her family consists of her parents, an older brother, and a younger sister, Kim Hayeon, who made her solo debut in 2020. Having believed that she was “only talented” at singing, Taeyeon first dreamed of becoming a singer at a young age.

During her second year in middle school, Taeyeon accompanied her father to SM Academy, a former music institution and auxiliary affiliation of SM Entertainment, to pursue vocal lessons. Although at the time her father did not encourage Taeyeon to become an entertainer, he was persuaded by the school’s principal to give his daughter a chance after she recognized Taeyeon’s “clean” voice. During the next year, Taeyeon accompanied her father from their hometown to Seoul every Sunday to receive vocal lessons from The One.  She named BoA, Whitney Houston, and Hikaru Utada as her pre-debut inspirations.

Taeyeon trained under The One for three years. In a 2011 interview, he described Taeyeon as a “smart” student, someone “unlike others who came to him with dreams of becoming a celebrity… [she] wanted to be a singer and reach the top with her own talents.” In 2004, he “wanted to acknowledge Taeyeon’s potential” by giving her the chance to be in his song “You Bring Me Joy.”

That same year, she won first place at the SM Youth Best Competition and signed a contract with SM Entertainment. The training process was so tough that she almost quit at one point; she persisted, however, and debuted as a member of the girl group Girls’ Generation in August 2007. Both the president of SM Academy and The One later named Taeyeon as one of their most memorable students.Taeyeon graduated from Jeonju Art High School and was awarded the school’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

2008-2015: OSTs, TTS, and SM the Ballad

Taeyeon sang “7989” (featuring Kangta), a track from both Girls’ Generation’s self-titled debut album (2007) and Kangta’s fourth studio album, “Eternity” (2008).

Taeyeon began to gain popularity through her various television soundtrack releases, recording “If” for the KBS2 drama Hong Gil Dong (2008) and “Can You Hear Me” for MBC’s drama “Beethoven Virus” (2008).

“If” was later deemed more popular than its respective drama, and “Can You Hear Me” won a Popularity Award at the 2008 Golden Disk Awards. Both tracks remain among Taeyeon’s most well-known hits. During this period, she also recorded “It’s Love,” a duet with Girls’ Generation member Sunny, for the MBC drama “Heading to the Ground” (2009).

Following a radio hosting job in 2009–10, Taeyeon journeyed into acting, making her theatrical debut in a lead role in the 2010 musical “A Song to the Sun.”  She played the part of Kaoru Amane, a teenager who suffered from xeroderma pigmentosum and learned to play a guitar for the role. Her performance in the sold-out shows received good press despite the musical’s critical reviews of the musical itself.

Jang Gyeong-jin of 10Asia praised Taeyeon’s “distinct vocals” and commented that her acting stood out among idol stars who had ventured into musical theatre,[ while Kim Ji-yeong from The Dong-a Ilbo felt “Taeyeon’s optimistic and charming personality made her the perfect match” for the role. Despite the favorable response, Taeyeon later described musicals as difficult, stating that her weak concentration made it hard for her to act and sing at the same time.

The same year, Taeyeon worked with Korean songwriter-composer Ahn Young-min. She recorded “Like A Star,” featuring The One, which reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart.

Her next single, “I Love You,” for the SBS drama “Athena: Goddess of War” soundtrack, reached number two. Ahn recalled his impression of the latter song: “I was surprised at how well Taeyeon could sing. This is a rather mature song, so I would be lying if I said I didn’t have my doubts, but she blew me away. I was moved to tears listening to her singing.”

In 2011, Taeyeon lent her voice to Kim Bum-soo’s “Different,” a single on his seventh album “Solista: Part 2.”The song debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. Taeyeon and Kim Bum-soo reunited at his concert two years later for a live cover version of Bum-soo’s 2008 song “Man and Woman.”

After their first collaboration on the drama “Beethoven Virus” (2008), musical director Lee Pil-ho was determined to collaborate with Taeyeon again on the soundtrack for MBC’s melodrama “The King 2 Hearts” (2012), having her record the main theme song “Missing You Like Crazy”. It was released in March 2012 and debuted at number two on both the Gaon Digital Chart and K-pop Hot 100.

Taeyeon’s vocals received positive feedback from the song’s composer Park Hae-woon: “She fully understood the song in its entirety and expressed each detail very precisely…even though this song requires the lowest note that a female singer can produce, Taeyeon executed them perfectly.” The song was named the most popular soundtrack at 2012 Seoul Drama Awards.

Later in the year, she contributed vocals to the song “Closer”, for the SBS drama “To the Beautiful You,” which charted at number seven on both the Gaon Digital Chart and K-pop Hot 100.

In April 2012, a subgroup of Girls’ Generation called TTS was formed, its lineup consisting of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. Their debut EP, “Twinkle,” was met with much success and became South Korea’s eighth-highest selling album of the year.

The subgroup went on to release two more EPs: “Holler” (2014) and “Dear Santa” (2015). In January 2013, Taeyeon and Tiffany sang a duet, “Lost in Love,” which was featured on Girls’ Generation’s fourth Korean album, “I Got a Boy”.

Two months later, she recorded “And One,” written and composed by Kangta, for the SBS drama “That Winter,” “The Wind Blows.” It debuted at the top of Billboard’s K-pop Hot 100 and reached number two on the Gaon Digital Chart.

In July 2013, Taeyeon was invited to record the theme song “Bye” for the soundtrack of the film “Mr. Go” after its musical director was left with a “deep impression,” having heard her cover version of a song during a radio appearance.

In February 2014, Taeyeon joined the roster of SM the Ballad, a ballad group initially formed by SM Entertainment in 2010, contributing vocals to their second album “Breath.” Her title track of the same name, a duet with Shinee’s Jonghyun, peaked at number three and six on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and K-pop Hot 100 Chart, She also recorded a solo song, “Set Me Free”, for the album.

Her other releases in 2014 included “Colorful” for JTBC’s campaign “The World Is More Beautiful Because We’re Different” and “Love, That One Word” for the SBS’s drama “You’re All Surrounded;” the songs entered Top 10 on both Gaon Digital Chart and K-Pop Hot 100.

In February 2015, Taeyeon accepted a personal request from f(x)’s Amber to feature in “Shake that Brass”, the title track from her debut album, “Beautiful.”

2015-2016: Solo Debut and First Solo Concert

Taeyeon began working on her solo projects in late 2014, believing the “right time” had come after eight years with Girls’ Generation. She released her debut EP, “I”, in October 2015. It peaked at number two on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart, and charted atop the US Billboard World Albums. As of 2019, it has sold 160,000 copies in South Korea. The commercial success of “I”, according to Yonhap News Agency, was the main contributor to SM Entertainment’s leading music sales in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The title track, which features rapper Verbal Jint, incorporated elements of pop rock that marked a departure from the ballad sound she had been known for until then. The song peaked at number one in South Korea, where it has sold over 2.5 million digital units. To accompany her solo release, Taeyeon held a series of small concerts called “Taeyeon’s Very Special Day,” and a reality show, “OnStyle’s Daily Taeng9Cam.”She was awarded Best Female Artist at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards and at the 2016 Golden Disk Awards.

Taeyeon featured on Yim Jae-beom’s “Scars Deeper than Love” (2015), Verbal Jint’s “If The World Was a Perfect Place” (2015), and Crush’s “Don’t Forget” (2016). “Don’t Forget” sold over 2.5 million copies in South Korea.

In February 2016, she recorded “Rain” as the popular release of SM Entertainment’s digital music platform SM Station.”Rain” peaked at number one in South Korea, where it sold over 2.5 million digital copies. Taeyeon and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun were featured in a commercial for bottled water brand Jeju Samdasoo, for which she recorded a cover of “The Blue Night of Jeju Island”. She also became a spokesperson for “Sword and Magic,” a game developed by the company Longtu Korea, for which she recorded a rendition of BoA’s 2003 song “Atlantis Princess”.

Taeyeon’s second EP, “Why” (2016), incorporated elements of more upbeat genres such as EDM and tropical house. It peaked atop the Gaon Album Chart, and charted at number two on the US Billboard World Albums. The EP has sold 120,000 copies as of 2019. It had two singles: “Starlight” featuring Dean and the title track, which peaked at numbers five and seven, respectively, in South Korea. The EP’s associated concert, “Butterfly Kiss,” made Taeyeon the first Korean female artist to go on a full-scale concert while still being a member of an active girl group.

In September 2016, Taeyeon recorded “All With You” for SBS’s television drama “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.”

Her next single, “11:11”, was released in November 2016. It peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and sold 1.4 million copies by 2017.
